(SAN BERNARDINO, CA) Last Saturday Southern Californians enjoyed balmy mid-70's weather and sunny skies. We were the envy of two-thirds of the nation. Danny Dominguez of Yucaipa enjoyed not only the weather but being the top fisherman at San Bernardino County's trout derby held at Yucaipa Regional Park, January 9th.

A mere ten minutes after the derby began, Dominguez, using a lure, reeled in his prize-winning 8 lb., 7 oz. catch. Over 640 anglers participated in the derby and prize catch sizes ranged from 1 lb. 3 oz. to Dominguez's top-ranked fish. Dominguez took away a $500 gift card from Turner's Outdoorsman for his accomplishment.

Reuben Arce, also of Yucaipa, found competitive fishing to be exciting. He caught a 4 lb., 10 oz. trout that landed him in second place in the derby. Arce's won a Bose ? docking station courtesy of Time Warner Cable.

Rounding out the top three was Victor Herrera of Oak Hills with a 4 lb., 6 oz. catch. Herrera came away with a camping tent and two sleeping bags courtesy of Camping World.

Many children participated in the trout derby bringing in several catches in the 1 to 2 pound range. San Bernardino County Regional Parks, in an effort to develop young anglers, hosts Junior Fishing Workshops throughout the trout season. On January 23rd a workshop is scheduled at Glen Helen Regional Park in northern San Bernardino. The cost is $5 per child plus the park vehicle entry ($10).
