The Hunt For Big Fish

11-12-2009
Pete Gray

It's that time of the year, the long range boats start seeing lots of big tuna on the lower banks of Magdalena Bay, some great sights, but not a lot of catching. And then it happens, suddenly these big fish start to bite. After a slow start to the season, that time seems to be starting to happen. More big fish are hitting the decks, and it only gets better from here. Keep tabs on all the long range action by listening to Let's Talk Hook-up.

Speaking of big tuna, Pete just returned from the Western Outdoor News Los Cabos Tuna Jackpot Tournament. A record 383 pound yellowfin tuna took big fish honors. There were not a lot tuna over 100 pounds brought to the scales in Cabo, but 9 teams shared in the jackpot money. Wahoo fishing was the best in years in southern Baja, as several were brought to the scales during the tournament, including the 61 pound wahoo that took the second day jackpot money for largest dorado or wahoo. For more information on the tournament, check out this week's Western Outdoor News and listen to the archives of last weekend's show broadcast live from Cabo by clicking here: www.hookup1090.com/showarchives

Bad news for anglers in this weeks Blue Ribbon Task Force decision to send a preferred alternative map to the Fish and Game Commission that includes many fishing closures in the future. Those hardest hit were Laguna, Malibu and southwest La Jolla. Point Loma was spared as well as Rocky Point. The closures at Catalina include an area around China Point, but squid fishing will still be allowed. Nothing should be put into law until late 2010, if then. Watch for several legal challenges and much more action from the angling community to protect our right to go fishing.

This Saturday morning from 7am to 9am Pete Gray and Rock Cod Rick will be in the XX studio with Justin Poe from Shimano. Justin is in charge of creating all the new rods for Shimano, and will have some great information on all the new "stuff" from Shimano. In addition, Justin is a fantastic angler, and certainly will have some hot tips to help you catch more fish. Sunday from 7am to 9am Pete and Rick will be back in the XX 1090 studio with John Ireland from Rancho Leonero. John owns and operates one of the most beautiful fishing resorts in the world. His easy going attitude will put you in the Baja fishing mode. It will be a great weekend to tune into Let's Talk Hook-up Saturday and Sunday- 7am to 9am on XX 1090AM or listen live on line at www.hookup1090.com. You can also listen to our archives from previous shows on our archives page.
