The weather is great, and the fishing is even better. Our local anglers are showcasing the various types of fish found in our area, mostly caught along the shores of the Colorado River below the Davis Dam.
In the Rotary Park area, Gerry Ward caught a limit of rainbow trout from a recent stocking from Crowthers Hatchery in Colorado. He was fishing from shore using a trout jig to land his limit. Joshua Verkanmp and his daughter, Maddy Archer, were fishing for panfish near the Sunshine Peninsula and landed a nice redear. They were using mealworms while fishing from shore. One of my favorite anglers, Mike Merrit, landed a nice stringer of stripers using anchovies while fishing in the Big Bend area.
I am hearing reports of limits of stripers being landed up and down the river, with anchovies working the best. There are many small stripers out there, and they make great fish tacos. The panfish bite is a bit slow as they seem to prefer still waters, while the trout are all over the river. You need to find the holes after stocking, as the trout move out to the current and feed on caddisflies.
We have some great fish to target. I hope this information helps, and we look forward to seeing you soon to share your catch and your story.
Now, go catch a fish!
