The Fly Fishers Place
The Metolius is a good bet this weekend. We didn’t see too much new snow in the Sisters and Camp Sherman area compared to South of Bend.
Good nymph action has been consistent these past several days on perdigons, micro mayfly, 2 bits, stoneflies, eggs and caddis pupa. I would tell you I think at this time an indicator rig is catching a few more than our typical and beloved euro set up. Hmmmm. The new Oros micro indicators are cool for the little nymphs and the small and mediums come into play for stoneflies and dropper set up and if you add soft weight to the rig.
Baetis hatches are the main hatch bringing trout to the top to feed. Look for that to happen about 1 or 1:30 and last for 10 to 45 minutes. Cripples and Emergers are usually best on a 12 to 15′ 6x leader.
Caddis hatches continue to impress. BIG October Caddis are always fun to see these clumsy flyers over the water. Smaller cousins to the October Caddis are the Silver Stripe Sedge and Snow Sedge and throw in some smaller Grey and Tan Caddis to the mix and on some days you might really see quite a few caddis around in the coming days and weeks.
Bull Trout have been coming to streamers for sure, so if that is your preferred way to target these predators, do it. More bulls have been netted with a small nymph in their mouth lately, so keep that in mind if you are fishing for the big ones.
