The Little Truckee saw a drop in flows this week, going from 140 CFS to 105 as of today. While this will make some of those runs you where fishing this fall a bit less productive, one thing about this river and these fish is they do often hold in some strange water and anything that is a foot or deeper with the right water speed can hold a fish and it’s all worth a cast or two. The dry fly bite slowed with the change in flows this week and we have seen fewer rising fish, but still a fair amount of baetis popping off through the middle of the day. In another week or two, we could see these fish begin to look up with regularity again, but even with a less-than-ideal dry fly bite we still had some shots at fish on top when we were out this week. With the drop in flows and the high level of clarity in the water, maintaining a stealthy approach will be very important out here. Especially after a high amount of angling pressure this summer and fall. Use 6x tippet, small flies, and take your time when approaching a run. Most importantly, make every drift the best you can.
