Andy Cates' docked Red Rooster III January 3 after an eight-day trip south. His 30 anglers had a good mixed catch of small to medium-sized tuna and yellowtail, along with some various species of bottom fish.
"We did get on one spot of bigger tuna," said skipper Cates, ?and the one we got aboard won the jackpot. The other one was quite a bit bigger, but the big one got away. When we left the banks we tried Cedros and Canoas for yellowtail and bottom fish.
Cindy Jones of Mission Viejo won first place with a 78-pound yellowfin tuna. "Yee-Ha!" she said, I got him in 15 minutes.
Cindy used a sardine on a 6/0 Super Mutu hook, on 100-pound P-Line and 130-pound Spectra backing, a Tiagra 50 reel and a Calstar Boomer Jr. rod.
Jesse Vanegas of Chula Vista was second for a 51.3-pound tuna, and Bill Brandstetter of Mission Viejo was third, for a 50.2-pound yellowfin tuna.
Hanz Rueckert posed with a brace of yellowtail.
