Fish Report for 9-1-2023
Cold water and great flows continue this week
9-1-2023
Trout Creek Outfitters
Cold water and great flows continue this week, the major change will be a storm front expected to move in on Friday. This storm front should provide excellent fishing conditions, as the drop in barometric pressure will inform the fish that fall is coming and it is time to pack it on. This mild storm system is expected to lay down moderate precipitation but will be short lived with Monday’s forecast sunny and about 15 degrees cooler than last week. Fall is knocking on the door, and this is going to be one of the fishiest autumns we have seen in long time. As the days get shorter and the nights cooler, we have seen the larger fish in our rivers become increasingly present, and most avid Truckee anglers will tell you the months of September and October will be the best times to find the trophy trout our area is known for. While our river is typically at its busiest in the months of June and July, the best fishing of the year happens in autumn. With a bit of luck, the skies will continue to stay clear of smoke. The combination of great air quality and great fishing conditions add to the feeling that the fly fishing this fall will be special.
Truckee River Fly Fishing Report & Forecast
Not much of a change in conditions this week here on the Big T. Both flows and water temps remain stable. The upper river remains low and it’s not until you get down below the Boca confluence that the river returns to it’s typical flows. Glenshire is still a fair option for those looking for a casual day fishing dry droppers for smaller fish, but for those looking to target the big guys, your best bet will be from Hirschdale through Reno. We are quickly coming into streamer season. With the rain this week, we encourage you to put some time into streamer fishing to see what you can move from the deeper runs. Your fall streamer selection should contain some larger flashier offerings, but it never hurts to have a few of the smaller go-tos such as sculpin and smaller crawdad flies. Even smaller, time-honored patterns such as a wooly bugger will be effective. The nymph selection should be much the same, and a good Truckee River box will consist of bigger offerings such as Pat’s Rubberlegs and Squrimy Wormies but should also contain equal part smaller and more natural flies like Hairs ear’s, Juju Baetis, Zebra Midges, and Rainbow Warriors to appease the taste of multiple pallets. The Nocturnal stone has made a solid appearance here on the California side this year, and when fishing the canyon, we recommend having some size 4-6 brown stonefly imitations at hand. The fish remain mostly in some medium speed current, with a few now being found more in the tail-outs. Look for riffles or pocket water for the time being but we would also encourage you to cover multiple types of water this time of the year as the fish transition from summer to fall.
Little Truckee River Fly Fishing Report & Forecast
The Little Truckee is fishing well, with improved dry fly fishing over the last few weeks. We are happy to report consistent flows all month, which for the LT is not all too common, this combined with the lighter crowds as of late has made this an excellent time to hit this outstanding tailwater. The bug du jour out here is a mix of BWO’s and midges. The PMD’s and caddis are still hanging around, but the bugs of fall are starting to show in force. The dry fly bite has been a bit inconsistent with the mayflies, but the midges are coming off like clockwork in the mornings and early birds should have a good variety of these patterns in their box to dupe those tricky trout. Using a stealthy approach, delicate presentation and light tippet will go a long way out here for finding the lunkers that call this river home.
