The Truckee has been holding similar flows this week when compared to last week, although when inspected closely you will see that there is certainly a downward trend happing as far as what is coming off the hillside. The regularity in flows is partially from the federal ‘Water Master’ moving dam releases up and down out of each reservoir, and those pesky thunderstorms that we have been seeing almost daily over the last week. Worry not, this weekend is forecasted to be beautiful and sunny with highs in the low 70’s all week. We are still seeing the water levels fluctuate plus or minus 200-400 CFS throughout the day from spring melt (now, summer melt?) and the time of day where the flows are at their lowest has been early afternoons at around 2:00-4:00 PM.

The flows and water clarity remain great around most of the California side of the river, with highly diminished water clarity once the river enters West Reno. This lower visibility will still be fishable along most of the Nevada side at this point, but larger nymphs and streamers will be pretty much the only way to go if you wanted to fish down here. Moving our way up the hill, the entire canyon section of river is very fishable right now, and the fish in this section have seen far fewer anglers this spring thanks to the high water. When fishing there, the typical bugs we’ve been preaching all spring will still be on the menu, such as stoneflies, worms, crawdads and eggs. However, as the water becomes clearer, we’ve been throwing in the occasional size 12 to 14 nymph imitating yellow sallies, green drakes, green sedge caddis, and march browns with some success.

Streamer fishing remains great down here using both a traditional presentation on a sinking tip, or high-sticking heavy jigged streamers on a euro setup, this is a great way to present sculpin patterns and crawdads. When you get up above the confluence of Boca Reservoir, the river is roughly half of the size as downstream, and the clarity is once again better than down lower in the canyon. The fish up here are still taking larger junk flies, and, up here we do encourage you to give the smaller offerings down to a 16-18 a try such as midges and perdigons. Lighter tippet may also be necessary here, especially when the smaller flies are used, we’ve been using 2x-3x tippet in the canyon and 4x-5x tippet upstream around Glenshire.
