Trinity River steelhead fishing!
10-15-2022
Jeff Goodwin
It sure doesn't feel like it now, but our winter steelhead season on the Trinity River is right around the corner! We will be offering Trinity River steelhead fishing trips again this season and currently we're booking January and February dates with Pro Guide, Captain Justin Thompson. Whether you prefer to use conventional or fly gear, Captain Justin Thompson is our top choice to pair our clients with when arranging their winter steelhead fishing trips. Year after year many of our clients experience a great day of productive fishing with Justin and thats why he's our go to guide for the Trinity River steelhead season. The last time I fished with Justin on the Trinity River for steelhead we hooked and landed 13 adult steelhead ranging from 6-12 lbs. Thats a great day on the river for any steelhead fishing enthusiast anywhere in the country these days.
California's coastal steelhead streams get a lot of attention but with drought and high water conditions, many of those coastal streams can be unfishable for extended periods during most winter seasons on the California coast. The Trinity River flows are dam controlled and rarely does it have too little or too much water to fish for steelhead. This makes the Trinity River a sure thing when booking that long distance steelhead fishing trip. A worst case scenerio only results in moving a trip to the Sacramento River in Redding for big wild rainbow trout and steelhead.
The Trinity River is a smaller river and can only be fished from shore or from a drift boat. Most sections of the river we fish are quiet and rarely crowded during a typical day of steelhead fishing. Many of our clients come back year after year for this quiet and relaxing steelhead fishing trip. Our trips are best suited for parties of two anglers but occasionally we'll book a party of 3 in Justin's 19' aluminum drift boat. With level floors and movable seats, its easy to configure the boat for 2-3 clients for a drift down the Trinity.
This is just a small piece of information on winter steelhead fishing the Trinity River but I'll be reporting with more updates and season information in the coming months. If you're interested in catching winter steelhead on the Trinity River this season, please contact jaynie Goodwin at (530) 510-2925 for more information and available dates in January- February. Thank you!
