I have some FANTASTIC news to report regarding the seat on the Pacific Fisheries Management Council soon to be vacated by Roger Thomas (termed out). Dan Wolford, Science Director of the Coastside Fishing Club, has been selected by the State of California ??? and specifically by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger - as one of three candidates recommended to replace Mr. Roger Thomas for the California "at-large seat" on the PFMC. The other two names selected are Pete Leipzig (commercial fishermen) and Dave Bitts (commercial salmon and crab).

Over the past several years Dan Wolford has emerged as a leading advocate for science-based fisheries management and a strong leader within the recreational fishing community. Dan has done simply outstanding work bringing a science and conservation-based perspective to the Council process. His outstanding work has been recognized with his selection as one of three candidates supported by Governor Schwarzenegger and the State of California.

Dan's name has now been sent to Washington (with the two other names) where a final selection will be made for the Council seat. Coastside will be working hard with the American Sportfishing Association (ASA), United Anglers of Southern California, and the vast majority of recreational fishing advocacy groups to support Dan at the federal level.

In the mean time I am asking every Coastsider to take a few minutes and send Governor Schwarzenegger a letter thanking him for selecting Dan as one of the three candidates to represent California on the PFMC. This is very important. Often times our only communication with state government is when we are unhappy with a decision and this is an excellent opportunity to let the Governor know just how much we appreciate this very wise and balanced choice. Dan's selection by the Governor reflects California's strong conservation ethic of marine resources and wise public use policy. We are very proud of th e Governor for recognizing this and supporting Dan Wolford as a candidate for the Pacific Fisheries Management Council. At the very least, send a letter simply thanking the Governor for including Dan as one of the three candidates for the PFMC seat.
