Hot trout bite on Shasta Lake!
7-28-2022
Jeff Goodwin
Shasta Lake is finally fishing its summer pattern and the trout bite has been great! Most trout are being caught 70-80' deep or below the shad schools when the trout are feeding. The main body of the lake between the I-5 bridge and the dam are producing well now. Dodger spoon combos are always a summer favorite and hundreds of nice trout and salmon are taken on them every year. The Shad patterns are hot right now or nickel finish spoons with black or blue accents work great as well. Fresh Shad or Anchovy baits are an excellent choice for the big browns and King salmon. The morning bite is the best and with the air temps in the 100's for the past few weeks, getting an early start can give you your best chance for getting limits and heading in before the heat of the afternoon sets in. This is probably one of my favorite times of the year to fish Shasta Lake because the fast action is always impressive. August and September will yield some of the biggest rainbows and salmon of the season you can be sure. Shasta kind of slipped off the radar this summer and its a shame because its a fun place to fish and every bite could be a 10 plus pound salmon or trout, any day of te week. It doesnt happen all the time that we get multi pound trout and salmon on a day of fishing the lake, but you never know when its your turn!
