Weather & Bait

Now that we are in our summer months, the weather conditions are starting to settle down. The mornings are pleasant giving way to hot afternoons. A month ago we were cursing the winds, now we are praying for an afternoon breeze to cool us down.

Bait is plentiful both in the bay for mackerel and anchoveta and sardines around Tecolote. Honestly everything seems to be on track, except perhaps the water conditions. With the La Niña conditions predicted for this season, hopefully the pelagic migration will stay on schedule, with that said we are definitely experiencing cooler water temperatures especially inshore. This week we had water temperature ranging from 75-80 degrees, from dirty green no visibility to clear cobalt blue. This has become very challenging for our captains. 

Fish Talk

One day fishing is great for Dorado and striped Marlin only to be skunked the next. By weeks end we were back catching limits of yellowtail and AmberJacks on the rocky spots 20 minutes outside the marina. These are spring time fish. Crazy times.

The sargasso paddies are building up in the current lines from the San Lorenzo channel to La Rena. If you follow the track slow trolling sardines from paddy to paddy, this will eventually pay off and when it does it’s like winning the lottery. We found a few last week holding 20-30 fish from 10-50 lbs.

Not much to report on tuna other then the inconsistent bite is becoming more consistent. There’s no real pattern one day we will see a few, catch one or two then not see them for another week. Fortunately the ones caught are 60-100 lbs. A one hour battle in this heat is enough for most people.

We have our annual Dorado tournament on July 10th. This is a big local tournament with over 100 teams slugging it out for a 1 day largest fish.

Overall the outlook for the season looks favorable, as the water continues to warm up and bait is plentiful we are looking forward to having a great year.
