Fish & Trail Report 6-19-22

 

It’s been said that variety is the spice of life. If that is true, and I believe it is, this week was a spicy one!!!

 

After last weekend’s short bout of wind we had a nice little warmup with spectacular warm days and a calm north breeze by mid-week making for glassy calm mornings at Lake Sabrina and epic hiking conditions early in the day. It was summer heaven. Then by Friday we had afternoon snow flurries, another bout of 60mph wind, and by 3am Saturday morning when a surprise load of Idaho Rainbow Trout arrived just in time for the weekend, it was barely 30 degrees. Father’s day was nice and today was back to shorts and flops weather. We had days so beautiful you couldn’t help but get outside and a couple that required all the clothes in your bag and a beanie from the Parchers gift shop to fish comfortably. The last week of Spring gave us a little extra for her last hoorah.

 

The trail conditions are flat out amazing for the date with all popular day hiking trails open and snow-free and the local passes doable without any specialized gear. We’re starting to see an increase in hiking traffic but it’s still a little quieter than it should be given the conditions. Having said that, I have no doubt we’re going to see a big influx of hikers over the coming weeks since Father’s Day weekend typically signifies the start of the “peak season” for us as the last of the schools get out for summer and the family vacation season begins. Not to mention all the backpackers and hiking enthusiasts who made their plans based on seasonal averages, which normally point to late June or early July as the time when the deep reaches of the backcountry become accessible.

 

With the increase in foot traffic inevitable, it’s a good time to remind everyone to PLEASE PAY ATTENTION to, and more importantly ADHERE TO, signage. There is day use parking, overnight parking, overflow parking, places where parking is prohibited for the safety of everyone, signs about where to put trash and where you can and can’t have a fire. It takes one moron ignoring the parking signs to start an avalanche of copycats making a summer weekend a parking nightmare for everyone. It takes one jerk with a match to end the entire season or a whole lot worse.

 

As far as the lake level goes, it continues to charge up at a steady pace and we love it. We love pulling the dock up higher and higher…well not really, but we love WHY we must move the dock. Our boat customers have been having an absolute ball out there with excellent fishing. Even novice anglers are having no trouble whatsoever getting on fish. The hottest spots on the lake are the inlets, but the dam or any rocky point is worth a shot. It really doesn’t matter what you’re throwing, they’re biting. We do recommend using artificial lures or flies when the bite is this good because you can only keep five. There’s no point in gut hooking and releasing 20 fish to die afterwards when you can toss a jig or spoon and safely release fish all day until your arm hurts.

 

The lake is well stocked by the DFW at present, and they continue to stock North Lake, Intake 2 and both forks of Bishop Creek. Our observation on creek fishing is that the DFW is not stopping at as many places as they did prior to 2020. I’m going to follow up on this, but in the meantime, keep moving until you find them. If rthe bite isn’t going well for the first 20 minutes, don’t spend all morning there because it’s doubtful to change. Intake 2 has been absolutely wide open with some anglers reporting 40 fish days (catch & release) tossing jigs from shore. All smaller models but still, that’s pretty dang good.

 

The midnight stocking of Idaho fish couldn’t have gone better as we put in 1200lbs of fish averaging better than 1lb each with a few up to 3lbs + being spread around the canyon ponds, both forks of Bishop Creek and Lake Sabrina. With South Lake being too low for stocking, the fish we usually dump there we split between Sabrina and the creek. Lots of fish out there folks.

Current fleet is 4 pontoons, 6 motorboats, 2 kayaks but we plan to expand considerably prior to next weekend.
