North Santiam Complete Blockage to Boaters, Floaters

5-25-2022
Oregon State Marine Board

The Marine Board is advising those who boat or float the North Santiam River below Stayton Bridge that they need to ensure taking out before going downstream of Buell Miller (also known as Hess or Shelburn) boat launch. There is a complete river-wide log jam on the main channel.

Boaters and floaters are advised to avoid recreating from Buell Miller to Jefferson, due to multiple large woody debris accumulations and strong river current on the North Santiam River. This is a high-risk area for potential entrapment, strainers, capsizing, and challenging access for first responders.

To learn more about obstructions and alternate put-in and take-out locations, visit the Marine Board’s Boating Obstruction Dashboard.

Take the time to plan your float and scout ahead. For more information on boating and water safety, visit Boat.Oregon.gov.
