Silver Lake Fishing Report 5/7 – 5/22/22

Long gone are the days of catching your limit everyday that you get the pleasure of fishing here in the beautiful Eastern Sierra.  You will however, still get the same beauty that Mother Nature provides and you may get into a really nice 2 to 5 pound Rainbow here and there.  That is how things have been the past two weeks here at Silver Lake, where we have seen lots of really big and beautiful fish, but we haven’t seen very many stringers full, despite lots of effort.  This seems to be the unfortunate trend here in the Eastern Sierra, as the Department of Fish and Wildlife (DFW) have struggled to plant any of the lakes throughout the region, as they continue to struggle with disease within their hatcheries. See California Department of Fish and Wildlife page for additional information, please see CDFW’s frequently asked questions about the L. garvieae outbreak.  Also, members of the public can email questions to hatcherybacteriainfo@wildlife.ca.gov.  While the state is struggling to plant fish into our local waters, and yes anglers are frustrated by the lack of catching, we here at Silver Lake Resort are doing our absolute best, along with our friends from Ernies’ Tackle Shop and Mono County Tourism, to try to plant as many loads of privately purchased rainbows into the waters here at Silver Lake.  We have pre-purchased a 600 pound load from Desert Springs Trout Farm in Oregon to be delivered to Silver Lake about every three weeks and will do this throughout the entire summer.  A load is on schedule to be delivered some time next week!!  With all of that said, the fishing at Silver Lake has not been terrible over the past two weeks, we have seen plenty of very large and beautiful Rainbows weighing in between 2 and 5 pounds and had several over 6 pounds including Steve Gallego’s who had an 8 plus and a 9 plus rainbow that he caught early in the week.  We also had a beautiful 7 pound Cutthroat that was caught on the shore of Silver Lake last weekend.  The fish seem to still be deeper in the waters as we yo-yo with temperatures here in the Eastern Sierra, but look for the lake to flip over the next few weeks and those fish start to rise and feed a little more consistently.  Berkley Garlic Infused Pinch Crawlers, Rainbow Glitter Garlic and Night crawlers seems to be the most consistent baits, which is par for the course the past few years.  Also look for some good bug hatches on the surface of the lake over the next few weeks as things continue in that warmer trend.  In short, smile more, enjoy more and worry less and just sit back and enjoy the beauty of the Eastern Sierra and the June Lake Loop and if you catch a fish or two, well… its a Great day!!

The Silver Lake Resort is a full service resort in June Lake, CA. We offer accommodations for fisherman throughout the trout season.
