We have been hearing good reports from the Metolius. Caddis are ramping up and the fish are keying in on them. If you don’t see rising fish, a caddis nymph is a great bet right now. Pretty soon the green drakes will be out and this can be an extremely fun hatch to fish on the Met, especially when many anglers are preoccupied with salmon flies on the Deschutes. Golden Stones are always a great nymph choice on the Metolius, and one of these trailed by 10-12’ of tippet and a small caddis or mayfly pattern is a great choice. For bulls, nymphing large stones or streamers is a good method. Swinging large streamers is a good way to target bulls as well and a sculpin streamer can be a great way to try and entice some of the larger rainbows. It’s a great time of year to be on the river so get out there and get after some fish.
