Volunteer opportunity: Help improve fish habitat and fishing in Show Low Lake
3-30-2022
Arizona Game & Fish Department
SHOW LOW, Ariz. — Looking for a valuable conservation opportunity benefiting fish and getting some fishing in too? The Arizona Game and Fish Department is building and deploying fish structures for Show Low Lake, March 29-31, 2022, and still has room for some volunteers. If you make it an overnight trip, you could fish Silver Creek during the last week of the catch-and-release season or the beginning of the catch-and-keep season on April 1.
The project is building Georgia Cubes. These structures are used effectively in several of the SRP chain of lakes to improve habitat and provide great locations for anglers to target fish. Volunteers must be age 8 and up. Some work requires power tools, but there is plenty of hand labor as well. Once several cubes are built, AZGFD will transport and deploy them into the lake. All materials and tools are supplied. You should bring a mask, warm layers of clothing, heavy-duty work gloves, safety glasses, and closed-toed shoes. Additionally, since the work is outdoors, bring plenty of water, a sack lunch and whatever snacks you might need for the day.
The project work site is Show Low Public Works Department, 1281 E. Thornton Road, Show Low, AZ 85901. Register for the fish structure building project in advance at: Show Low Lake Fish Habitat Build & Installation. Contact Ryan Carrow at (928) 532-2307 if you have any questions.
Inclement Weather Plan: The habitat build will happen rain or shine. Habitat installation may be delayed if inclement weather is present.
