Good Spring fly fishing on the Truckee River

Spring’s always pretty good. Not a lot of numbers, but good fish when you hook ’em.

We are experiencing some run-off. Flows have come up to almost 700 cubes here in the Hirsch. Pretty good vis though. This is the time to get the big dogs, trust me.

Fish the edges first. Best thing to do is -go in with the streamer first. Nymph later. Trouts can’t hold up in the fast current. Look for soft pockets, edges, little pillows along banks. Wanna get a big brown trout? Well, Spring is the time. It’s much harder to find those big fish other times of the year.

Fish with whatever style you want. Lots of people think I’m just a Euro Nympher guy, well, that’s not true. Sure, I prefer not to have an indicator on, but you should fish with whatever style you like and have fun. They all will catch fish, especially this time of year.
