San Quintin Sportfishing Fish Report
9-29-2009
Jorge A. Rosales-Casian
We realized the trip from Ensenada at 07:30 am on Saturday 26, 2009, with a heavy fog that disappeared at Santo Tomas. Our arrived to San Quintín town after 2:15 hours of driving, just for breakfast at the Viejo San Quintín Restaurant, and with a sunny day. A minimum of eight pangas were out for fishing from Tiburon's Pangas, Garcia's Pangas, Pedro's Pangas, K&M Offshore, and Campo de Lorenzo We monitored four boats, only: Marinero, Suerte, Fany III, and Fany V, that lodged two fishermen per boat.
The four boats arrived with a total catch of 108 fishes, 13-14 fishes per angler.
The boat "Suerte" was fishing yellowtail exclusively for a total of ten, and two size groups were present: four yellows of 4-5 Kg, and a second group of six yellows with 8-10 kg, each. The boat Fany V captured a loneliness small Dorado of 4.5 pounds.
Boats Fany III and Fany V captured yellowtail and bottom fishes (5 yellows & 46 bottom fishes), while Marinero was only fishing at bottom for 57 fishes.
From the total catch, the most abundant fish species was the whitefish (51 individuals), 20 bonitos, 16 red rockfish, 15 yellowtail, and assorted of bocaccio, barracuda, lingcod, Sheephead, Starry rockfish, and flag rockfish.
The 240 fishing spot and Isla San Martin continued as a good and visited places. The sea surface temperature for this Saturday was 73 Fahrenheit degrees, however on Friday September 25th the captains reported up to 78oF. From past June to August, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) sent and advisory for a weak-moderate El Niño event, and the forecast is that *El Niño is expected to strengthen and last through the Northern Hemisphere winter 2009-2010. *With this, the sea surface temperatures can maintain highs up to January-February 2010, and I expect good fishing of big pelagic fishes at San Quintín during all this 2009.
Thanks to all captains and owners of sportfishing services at San Quintín; Tiburon invited us pork fried carnitas, and Bartoldo Garcia invited fish tacos (yellowtail and lingcod), but we finished at Jardines Baja Restaurant eating the whitefish ceviche, and Pismo clams (fried and mexican recipe).
We began our return from San Quintín at 19:00 and arrived to Ensenada at 21:30 hrs, to rest and to wait on Sunday the match San Diego Chargers-Miami Dolphin, that win Chargers (23-13).
*Ok, Saludos and wait my next report on October.
