Fish Report for 1-3-2022

Tucannon River steelhead fishing rule update

1-3-2022
WA Department of Fish & Wildlife Staff

Action: Closes fishing for and retention of steelhead.

Effective date: Jan. 4 through Apr. 15, 2022

Species affected: Steelhead

Location: Tucannon River from the mouth to the Tucannon Hatchery Road Bridge.

Reason for action: The 2021 Columbia River forecasted return for upriver steelhead was 89,200. These measures are consistent with the discussions and actions taken from North of Falcon pre-season season setting process due to a low forecast. Steelhead passage at Bonneville dam remains the lowest count on record. Predictions of natural origin steelhead returning to the Tucannon River are low. With concerns for broodstock needs and impacts to wild fish we feel it is important to close this fishery to protect steelhead within the Tucannon River.

Additional information: WDFW will continue to monitor steelhead returns and may update rules as additional information becomes available. Anglers are reminded to refer to the 2021/2022 Washington Sport Fishing Rules pamphlet for other regulations, including possession limits, safety closures, etc.
