LIBERTY: 1.5 OFFSHORE TUNA TRIP
9-5-2009
Edgar Ylanan
This is my second trip on the LIBERTY. I had a pleasure of fishing with Capt. Anthony fishing Rockcod at Catalina Island on my last trip. LIBERTY is one huge 85 footer vessel. It makes you feel like you're in San Diego. We finally left Long Beach harbor around 9:30 pm and shoot straight to the bait receiver. We loaded up with lots of fine & lively Sardines. The plan was changed from Cortez Bank to the Mexican border. We finally reached our destination at 5am which is area 43 below the weather bouy. We are fishing the U.S. side. We finally got our troll around 5:30am. We got our first hit around 6:15am, double Skipjack Tuna, both of which were landed. I got my first fish on live bait. Second group of trollers were up and Mr. Lee got hit on his purple feather with a nice Dorado. The next stop was a kelp paddy. My buddy Jason from Arcadia hooked up a nice 20 lb Yellowfin Tuna. He got the jackpot on that fish. We got three Yellowfin on that paddy. We had few more jig strikes and found more kelp paddy fish but they're not really on a biting mood. We fished hard and ended with 12 Yellowfin Tuna, 1 Dorado, and 25 Skipjack for 36 anglers. Tough fishing for sure but we had fun. All the passengers on the boat were just friendly as ever. I made some new friends. A special thanks to Captain Johnny Jordon and Captain Pat Gorman for their hard work. And for the crew like Kevin and Bobby who did a superb job assisting everyone. To Wendy the chef for all the delicious meals that she prepared. I don't know how she handled all these people. Awesome job guys. I'll be back.
