South Lake Fish Report

8-30-2009
Jared Smith

The most accurate description for the bite at South Lake this week is inconsistent. Even folks who fished two days in a row often found an excellent bite on one day and slow fishing the next.. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to it. Trolling seems to be the best bet again this week with the fish holding between 4 and 8 colors with the occasional angler having some luck on top. The micro flasher/nightcrawler combo is still the top thing to haul but Brown Trout Rapala CD5's, Red/Gold Thomas Bouyants and a straight nightcrawlers are also worth a try.

Fishing from shore has been hit or miss but several good reports did come off the dam from guys soaking Powerbait 3ft off the bottom. A few folks had some good luck fishing from the shoreline near the launch ramp, mostly on metal lures directly following Thursday's DFG stocking.

The snow in the high country is just about gone so the flows at the inlets have slowed considerably. Still, even with the lower flows, there are a lot of fish stacked up back there and they have been on the chew early and late in the day. Orange or Pink Gulp! trout worms, yellow Powerworms and mini-jigs are still producing fish for the anglers who know how to fish plastics. Flylined crawlers, crawler/Gulp egg combo, Chunky Cheese and Salmon Peach Powerbait are the best producing still-baits. The rock slide has been slow most of the summer but the bite really came back strong this week and a couple big fish to 3lbs also came off the spot.

The lake is now 5-6ft from capacity and is dropping anywhere from 3 to 6 inches daily. Even with the drop, at the current rate we'll be sitting pretty well into September.
