MIRAGE: WSB AND MONSTER HALIBUT
8-1-2009
Don Padick
Our recent SFR charter on the Mirage rocked as Captain Tucker and crew guided us from the Channel Islands Sportfishing Center in Oxnard to the Channel Islands promised land where white seabass and monster halibut live and roam. Luckily for the SFR Crew, today was the day when conditions were perfect, the fish were hungry and biting and we were on the spot ready to let them have it. The crossing was a litle rough but we anchored up on the WSB grounds well before sunrise. A few hardy souls fished the morning darkness for nothing, while the rest of the crew rested up waiting for grey light. Shortly after the first signs of morning light appeared on the horizon the first seabass of the day was hooked and landed by Don Wong using a live squid on the dropper loop. Karl and I hooked up next and both landed nice seabass, followed by some hoots and hi-fives all around. It was all anglers on deck and fishing as noone wanted to miss this breakfast party. The first morning hours saw a steady pick on quality seabass as one or two anglers would get bit and do battle with and land a nice seabass. Then the halibut moved in on us, and not just any flatfish. Monster flatties started hitting the deck at a pace I've personally never seen before. Every few minutes an angler would hook up and before long another 25-45 lb flatty would be hauled over the rail. Just awesome fish !!!! The seabass kept biting as well and by the time it died down we had landed 32 white seabass to 28 lbs and 12 halibut to over 45 lbs. What a morning, yes this was before 10 am !!! Oh yeah. Then we limited out on quality San Miquel rockfish before calling it a day and heading for home. Truly and epic day !! Numerous anglers landed either: a 3 fish limit of seabass, a seabass and a halibut, two monster halibut or their first seabass or halibut. Truly a trip to remember !!Special thanks to Captain Tucker and the entire Mirage crew for a job well done!!! Check their website at www.miragesportfishing.comor call the Landing at 1-805-382-1612 for their entire schedule. Wow, what a trip !!! Thats the "word on the water."
