Big Bear Lake Fishing Report 07-19-2009
7-19-2009
Alan Sharp
Fishing for all species remains steady on Big Bear Lake. Smallmouth Bass are hitting small spinners in the bays and near docks, Crappie are being landed on Gulp Waxies, mealworms and small spinners in the same areas, Catfish to 12 pounds are showing along the North Shore and South Shore on mackerel and Gulp Dough, and Trout can be had from Windy Pt. West to the dam drift fishing with PowerBait and nightcrawlers or trolling spoons at 2 to 3 colors of leadcore..
Water temperatures are unchanged on the surface while the bottom temperatures jumped two degrees across the lake. Oxygen levels are dissipating on the bottom up to ten feet, but remain high up to the surface. The trout are starting to head West to cooler water, (trout are being metered from Metcalf to Papoose Bays in large numbers) but can still be found in areas of the "Trout Triangle" outside of the marina. Bait anglers from shore or boat need to start using a slip bobber (see Tackle Tips page) rigged from 15 to 20 feet as oxygen levels are below 5 parts per million on the bottom now.
