Shasta Lake trout and salmon!

Jeff Goodwin

Shasta Lake is producing some good numbers of rainbow and brown trout along with some really good quality Kokanee fishing!  Its interesting to see the number of Kokanee salmon we're catching with semi non traditional techniques.  Its great to be able to troll for Kokanee, Kings, and trout using the same gear every day.  Its great to be able to hook fish and not know whats coming up to the surface before dipping the net.  Most days we're catching three if not four species of fish on Shasta, and sometimes five!  If you are targeting King salmon salmon I would still recommend running dodger/flasher combos with Brads Cut Plugs or the typical fly/squid presentations.  The bigger Kings are often caught trolling Trinidad Tackle anchovy bait heads with the green label anchivies.  People fishing specifically for Kokanee should have a good selection of Trinidad Tackle 4"  dodgers and micro hoochies tiped with Pautzke Fire Corn soaked in your favorite scent.  For rainbows and browns, its hard to beat trolling spoons or spoon/dodger combo's.  The Trinidad Tackle Optimizer Jr. spoons are a great size to use right now with all the Shad schooled up over open water.  The lake is heating up and we're seeing water temps in the high 70's by mid day.  The water is still pretty cold at the 40'-50' mark and most of the trout and Kokanee are still hanging out 30'-40' deep.  Those depths won't last too much longer and these fish will start to push down as the warm water layer gets deeper throughout the next 4 months or so.  We're fishing down in the main body between the I-5 bridge and the dam, but there are still some great Kokanee schools holding up higher in the arms of the lake.  Those Kokanee schools will move down into deeper water as the lake drops and the upper arms warm up too much for the Kokanee to hang out in.  Everything points to another great summer season on Shasta Lake so now is the time to get your trip scheduled.  We'll have 2-3 guides available daily so getting your preferred dates shouldn't be too much trouble.  Visit jeffgoodwinfishing.com for more info!  Thank you!
