NDOW Southern Fishing Report

Nevada Department of Wildlife
Anglers have found good fishing for rainbow, tiger, and brown trout. The fish will take lures and commercial trout baits. Night crawlers always are a good option, as are an all-silver Panther Martin or a Mepp’s spinner in red and gold. Bass and trout are both hitting Woolly Buggers in black or olive.
Recent rainstorms have resulted in murky water conditions and slightly higher water levels. Crappies are taking jigs from boats and from the dam. Rainbows are taking worms and PowerBait just off the bottom. When weather allows, a small bobber with a leader keeps your bait just above the vegetation.
LAKE MEAD
Boaters are finding good striped bass action in the Boulder Basin. Anglers are averaging ten fish. The stripers are showing a preference for hard plastics in shad patterns and anchovies. Black bass are hitting jigs and soft plastics in blue, white, and chartreuse. Bluegill activity is starting to pick up in the Las Vegas Bay. Try fishing small pieces of night crawlers or meal worms just off the shoreline.
Anglers fishing in the early morning hours are being rewarded with rainbow trout and striped bass at Willow Beach. Rainbows larger than 4 pounds have taken spinners and night crawlers fished from shore. Striped bass anglers are catching fish with trout swimbaits on a slow troll. Further south, black bass are active in the backs of coves. Anglers are having success with a variety of spinners, tubes, and jigs.
Rainbow trout are cruising the shorelines south of Big Bend of the Colorado State Recreation Area. Trout jigs and spinners are helping anglers land their five-fish limit. Anglers targeting striped bass are reporting success using anchovies, pencil poppers, and trout swimbaits.
Cold and wet conditions slowed fishing at Kirch this past week. Bass fishing will continue to improve as temperatures rise. Anglers have reported better fishing in the evenings. Trout fishing is good on Cold Springs using spinners and Woolly Buggers. Boaters launching at Haymeadow and Cold Springs are advised to use caution as the entry may be shallow. Weather fronts often bring windy conditions. Be prepared to change your plans.
Bluegill and catfish are taking mealworms and night crawlers throughout the day. The Nevada Department of Wildlife stocked bluegill last week. Please discard unwanted fishing line in recycle bins or trash receptacles. Anglers 12 years of age and older need a Nevada fishing license, and there is a three-fish limit at all urban ponds.
