Excellent Mid-Day Hatch

2-19-2021
Doug Rodricks

The Lower Owens River has been experiencing an excellent mid-day hatch on Blue Wing Olives. Lots of beautiful wild brown trout are turning out for this daily event, and the best days are overcast for a steady bite on the surface.

The Lower Owens River has been very fun fishing the mayfly hatch which has been lasting from 1 to 2 hours each day. The overcast days produce a better and longer hatch, and a 3 weight rod is perfect to get after these rascals. Most of the fish we are catching during the hatch are wild browns, and they can be found in the slower water and eddie pools. We have been chucking smaller streamers on sink tip lines prior to and after the hatch to get into the rainbows and browns during the non-hatch periods.
