International Yellowtail Derby

A press release from John Campbell promises a new fishing contest will begin this fall, reminding many anglers of times past, when the spring yellowtail derby was the greatest thing in San Diego. The new derby will run from September 26 to October 4, and the initial announcement said it would include $50,000 in cash and prizes.

Also advertised in the announcement was a 100% payback of entry fees, with a $1,000 prize for any IGFA line class record set in the derby.

The international yellowtail derby is for private boaters and open party anglers, and IGFA rules will apply to all fish caught, as will California Dept. of Fish & Game rules.

There will be prizes in Junior and Adult categories, and special prizes for the largest fish caught each day. The area fished will be between the Mexican Border, including the Coronado Islands, and up to South of the Orange County Line, said the announcement.

Leader boards will be updated daily and available to be viewed at the Derby Headquarters, at the Outboard Boating Club at 2210 Shelter Island Dr. in San Diego. Daily results will also be available on the website, and press releases will be sent out daily.

The contest will benefit charities:

Big Brothers & Big Sisters

IGFA Junior Fishing Program

The Coast Guard Foundation
