American Angler docked at Pt. Loma Sportfishing under Sam Patella's hand February 16, 2009, after a 14 ?? day trip sponsored by Ken's Custom Reels of Oceanside. Store owner and chartermaster Ken Corwin was aboard and scored a cow. There were six fish over 200 pounds.

Jamie Lyons got a supercow, a 302-pound yellowfin on the kite, which made it ineligible for the jackpot. He said he took it with a sardine on a 9/0 ringed Super Mutu hook tied to 130-pound Izorline and 130-pound Izor spectra on an Avet 50 reel and a Calstar 760 H rod, in only 40 minutes.

"I pull on things," said Lyons to dock reporter Bill Roecker. "I had about 45 pounds of drag at the end, and started at about 30 pounds. You know, some 190-pounders fight harder. He went down right away, took me around the boat three times, and came up on the bow. "

Drew Hoffos of San Diego won first place for a 244-pounder. He got it in 35 minutes, after it ate a sardine on a 6/0 ringed Super Mutu. He said he fished with 130-pound Blackwater fluorocarbon leader and 130-pound Izorline Spectra on an Accurate ATD 50 reel and a Calstar 760 H rod.

Zeke Harloff of Oceanside won second place for a 232-pound tuna. He fished a sardine on a 6/0 ringed Super Mutu on 130-pound Blackwater fluorocarbon and 130-pound Izorline Spectra. Zeke strung his line on an Accurate ATD 30 reel and a Calstar 77465 H rod, and took 40 minutes with his cow before bringing it to gaff.

Bruce Marcotte of Oceanside won third place for a 225-pound yellowfin. He got that one with a sardine on a 6/0 ringed Mustad Hoodlum hook tied to 100-pound Blackwater fluorocarbon and 130-pound Line One Spectra backing on a Penn 30 reel modified by Cal Sheets, and a Calstar 7465 H rod.

John Metcalf of Danville caught a 220-pounder on a sardine and a 6/0 ringed Super Mutu. He said he used 100-pound Blackwater fluorocarbon and 80-pound Line One Spectra on a Tiagra 20 reel and a Calstar 765 H rod.

Chartermaster Ken Corwin of Ken's custom Reels bagged a 220-pounder with a sardine on a 6/0 ringed Mustad Hoodlum hook tied to 100-pound Blackwater fluorocarbon and 80-pound Izorline, strung on a Penn 20 reel with a Baker conversion and a Calstar 7465 M rod. He said the fight went 20 minutes, that it was "?Ķjust a blast!"

The fish may be leaving the inside waters off Baja, speculated several of the anglers. On the last day of fishing, Friday the 13th, the only notable fish taken was a tuna of 180 pounds, said the man who got it, Bill Kuehl of Escondido.

Skipper Patella married a pair of anglers on the way home.

"?Ķlate yesterday the weather got nicer," he wrote, "and we had a little Wedding ceremony in the galley with Bev May and Cam Roberts taking their wedding vows. Just one of the duties we are more than happy to perform for our customers. It was also a great reminder on Valentine's Day to cherish those that we love."

American Angler is done for the winter season. The boat will go back to fishing on May 15th. Anglers can see the owner-operators and sign up for next season's trips at the Fred Hall Fishing Show in Long Beach March 4th through the 7th.
