Right now may present a unique opportunity when all the stars are perfectly aligned to make your angling dream of a lifetime come true. There are big schools of huge tuna marauding around the Hurricane Bank and the Southern Banks off of Southern Baja California, and there is plenty of room on several of the long range boats specializing in this fishery.

The Intrepid, arrived home January 5, 2009, with one of the most remarkable scores of huge tuna, as measured by fish over 300 pounds, known in the industry as ?Super Cows.? Captain Kevin Osborne has been at the helm of the Intrepid for less than a year but has brought in some of the year?s most incredible catches. Osborne was ecstatic; ?We have never seen so many giant fish over 300 pounds at one time. It is breath taking to watch them blow up around the boat and chase baits! This is incredible to say the least. This is what everyone dreams about when it comes to Cow Town!!? Final count wa s 12 tuna over 200 pounds including four over 300 pounds.

Other skippers have been excitedly reporting the same thing and predicting these fish would go off at any time. On December 30, the Royal Star was surrounded by big tuna charging the boat and crashing on baits everywhere. Captain Brian Sims reported; ?We had multiple stops today with 150 - 300 plus pound fish boiling aggressively all around the boat. The visuals were simply amazing.? The Royal Polaris returned the last week of the year with over 60 tuna over 200 pounds. On January 5 the Angler unloaded 4 fish over 300lbs and had another 8 over 200lbs. The quality of these fish has never been better and any day we hope the numbers will increase too.

Historically a 200 pound yellowfin tuna, called a ?Cow? in the trade, was the lifetime goal of nearly all long range fishermen. Anglers could fish for 20 years and never land a 200 pound cow. Many anglers may fish that long and never land a 100 pound tuna, so a 200 pound giant is indeed quite a feat. Many anglers had a chance to catch a cow in 2005 when the huge tuna swarmed the Southern Banks of Baja. That chance is back today.

Go Now; Go Now; Go Now!!!!!!! For most long range anglers a 200 pound tuna really is still a fish of a lifetime, and the chances of catching one today may be better than in a very long time. It also appears the bar is being raised and a new super elite is being established by those hard core and lucky anglers and crews catching 300 pound super cow monsters. This may be a perfect opportunity to eclipse the 200 pound mark and even join the new super elite club with a 300 pound fish.

The adrenaline rush of watching two and three hundred pound tuna boiling, jumping and viciously slashing through the water attacking baits all around the boat is impossible to describe. The anticipation of one of these monsters grabbing your bait is agonizing. The power of it screaming off line at Mach 5 against impossibly tight drag is down right scary and exhilarating all at the same time. And the pride and satisfaction of bringing one of these big fish to gaff with the cheers of excitement and high fives from your fishing mates and crew members is a moment you will treasure for the rest of your life.

Many anglers express concern and fear about catching a 300 pound monster. Don?t be afraid. These fish are immensely powerful, but the tackle today helps the angler fight and land these fish. It?s like trying to ride a bike up a steep hill with a one speed bike versus a 10 speed. The graphite rods and the ultra strong 2 speed reels make it all attainable to almost any angler. Ladies with less than average height and weight have landed these giants as well as gentlemen in their eighties. The Intrepid provides all new 2-speed Avet reels and Seeker rods for those anglers needing an equipment boost. The crews are all experienced pros and coach any angler completely through the fight and process.

When the fishing is really this good the only reminder to anglers is to practice good fish management and conservation. Harvest some trophies and enjoy catch and release after you have all you need for family and friends. Let?s all treasure and care for this phenomenal resource.

All long range skippers agree, timing is everything and the timing couldn?t be better right now. Call your favorite boat and get on the first available trip. The Hurricane Bank and the Southern Banks of Baja are giving anglers right now a lifetime opportunity to land a 200 pound fish, and maybe a 300 super cow.
