COLONETT YELLOWS ABOARD THE PACIFIC VOYAGER
12-13-2008
Don Padick
I was lucky enough to jump on board with Captain Mark Oronoz aboard the Pacific Voyager for a 1 1/2 day trip to Punta Colonett area in search of a late season yellowtail bite. We launched from Seaforth Landing in San Diego at 6 pm sharp to calm winds and seas. A bait tank full of big hearty cured sardines was already on board so we headed straight out for the 120 mile run to Mexico. We hit the Punta Colonett area by 7:30am and it wasn't long before Captain Oronoz told us to drop em down fast and crank em up even faster. We drop the jigs to the bottom and started cranking and it wasn't a few moments before the first cries of "hook up" were heard as hardcharging yellows nailed the jigs. The yellows were all 20-30+ lb hard charging fish that were not at all to happy at the prospects of hitting the fillet table. We settled down and started putting the iron to em as one jig fish after another found the gaff. Heavy 40 -50 lb test line with a heavy blue and white or scrambled egg jig was the hot ticket. The dropper loop also got a bunch of fish but the jigs were by far the most productive way the get bit. By the time the bite had faded, nearly four hours later, we had put 48 yellowtail on deck. Way to go Guys !!!!!! We then loaded up of rockfish and whitefish before calling it day as the wind and weather started to pick up. What a day !!!! Special thanks to Captain Oronoz and his fine crew for working so hard, feeding us so well and getting us on the fish. Big yellows in December, what more could you ask for.
