Del Valle Lake Fishing Report

East Bay Regional Park District

September has been great for striped bass and catfish. The water temperature is currently at 75 degrees, which makes it best for catfish and striped bass. The water level is lowering as the lake level is dropped in preparation for winter rains.

Good Luck Fishin’

BLUEGILL/PANFISH

All of the panfish are putting up numbers! Bluegill and Crappie have been favoring red worms and pieces of nightcrawlers. Other productive baits have been panfish jigs in a variety of colors. The panfish are anywhere there is some cover including rocks, trees, and by our handicap dock.

TROUT

As we start stocking trout for the winter season, we anticipate that trout fishing will pick up quickly!

CATFISH

The catfish always seem to prefer cut baits like anchovies, sardines, mackerel, and chicken liver. The cats have been being caught all over the lake biting whatever is in front of them, the Narrows and by the dam seem to do a bit better if you are targeting cats.

BASS

The past week the bass have been selective on what they are hitting on. They are still active and biting, you just really need to figure out what they are feeding on that day. Nightcrawlers have been a good producer along with Senkos in a variety of colors. Crankbaits and rattletraps are good lures to use when finding the bass since you can cover a ton of water quickly.

STRIPED BASS

The stripers being caught are averaging four to seven pounds in weight. The striper boils are growing, and anglers are taking full advantage of the opportunity. The boils only lasting from about 6:00 am – 8:00 am and 5:00 pm – 9:00 pm. After the boils die down the best bet is frozen cut baits like anchovies, sardines, and mackerel. The hot striper lures are anything that could mimic a shad or any lure that creates lots of top water action.  They are being caught in the lower Narrows just before Swallow Bay, the upper Narrows and near the dam.
