Big Bear Lake Fishing Report
9-7-2019
Big Bear Sporting Goods
The first tell-tale signs of Summer's departure are upon the Big Bear Valley.
Labor Day has come and gone and along with that the dwindling crowds, Hotel signs now read "Vacancy" , and reservations are no longer required for dinner. The first day of Fall will soon be here! ….But will someone please tell the weather! Daytime temps are still reaching the high 70s and sometimes creeping into the low 80s.
For visitors who just want to come up and enjoy the fresh air of the mountains without the crowds and long lines of traffic now is the time!
One of my favorite quotes by John Muir..." Climb the Mountains and get their Good tidings. Nature's peace will flow into you as sunshine flows into the trees. The winds will blow their own freshness into you, and the storms their energy, while cares will drop away from you like the leaves of Autumn..."
The Big Bear Valley offers great respite and rejuvenation from the rigors of city life.
The Rainbow Trout bite is slowly showing signs of improvement as lake temps begin their downward descent.
Currently water temps are 68 degrees on the surface and 67 on the bottom. These temps are pretty consistent from the Buoy line to the West Public Launch Ramp.
Time of day and location are going to be the major contributing factors as to whether anglers are successful or not.
Early morning Trollers and Shoreline anglers are consistently successful. Keep in mind that early A.M. means that shoreline anglers need to have their lines in the water no later than 630 am. and Trollers should be in by 8am. if they want a chance at catching a nice hold over.
Trolling or Drifting a Nightcrawler dead center of the lake at 2 to 3 colors from the Buoy Line to the SS Relief and Papoose Papoose Bay has been a consistently producing circuit for most of Summer .
Shoreline anglers are pretty much relegated to the North Shore area from the Red House to just across from the S.S. Relief. Suspending Crawlers or Power Bait from a slip bobber or fishing a Carolina Rig with a 3to4 foot leader (4# or Less) of fluorocarbon. Power Baits are still the fare of choice.
The lake is "stocked to the gills" thanks to our M.W.D and the generous donations from the Visitors Bureau, local charter Captains and Marinas as well as the D.F.W. and that's great news as the Annual Western Outdoor Troutfest is slated for October 5th and 6th. Water temps, Dissolved Oxygen levels and the ambient air temps, are by all indications, falling in favor of anglers so we expect to see a lot of happy participants with tight lines and full stringers.
There is still room on the roster for more entries . Registration can be done On Line at the W.O.N. website or stop by BBSG and pick up a entry form.
