Collins Lake Report

Collins Lake Staff

Fishing action at Collins Lake is here to stay thanks to the consistent fish plants from here on out. One to two weekly Trophy plants are arriving on schedule as well as a F & G plant every other week. Our trout raising program is going quite well and they are getting BIG. Those trout will be released around the first week in May. The volume of raised trout equals about 12 trophy plants. That's a lot of fish! After those fish are released we will only have a few more plants then were done for the year. We have to stop planting at the end of May because the water temperature is too warm for the fish's survival. The fishing effort this week kept up at a steady pace with many catches from the shoreline as well as boats. I don't see a huge advantage to either one because both are working equally. The trout are hitting a variety of baits. Shore fishermen are using worms on a bobber, Powerbait, or lures and get their best luck from moving around and not getting stuck in one spot. The fish don't stay in one spot so it makes sense to me! Tammy of Auburn caught a beautiful 5 lb. 4 oz. Rainbow near the dam with worms on a bobber. George Tarr witnessed his talents to his grandkids Holly & Chase using yellow Powerbait off the beach. His son Ken, daughter-in-law Marcy, and friend Tom Baker have had some awesome fishing days with one up to 4 lb. 4 oz.. Steve Brown with Tightlines Guide Service out of Grass Valley landed a 7 lb. 8 oz. Rainbow trolling an Uncle Larry's spinner by the dam. Tom Bartol of Grass Valley netted a 6 lb. 4 oz. on a Fire Tiger jointed Rapala. A Fire Tiger Needlefish worked magic for Mirna Cimpo of Sacramento. She trolled that lure by the dam and captured an 8 pound monster trout. Little Emily of Wheatland caught a 4 lb. 4 oz. Rainbow on a Red/White Daredevil lure trolling near the dam. Lovely Gerri Morrison of Clearlake and husband Bob picked up a limit of trout while trolling Powerbait. Their biggest weighed in at 3 lb. 4 oz. Sergey Kuzmenko tossed a spinnerbait near the dam and lucked into a 7 lb. 4 oz. Rainbow. Junior & Jasmine of Woodland had a beautiful stringer of trout they helped Dad catch trolling with nightcrawlers.

Reese Lolmaugh of Biggs caught the biggest trout this week-an 8 lb. 2 oz. Rainbow trolling the east side with a chrome Kastmaster. Hats off to you Reese!
Dave Callison & his grandson Hunter limited out on bass this week (28 pound stringer) using purple worms. Kelle caught a huge Redear Sunfish that weighed 1 lb. 4 oz. just before the bridge out of her boat using worms. Weston Manies of Yuba City also caught a Redear 1 lb. 4 oz. Two nice Bass went home with Leslie Philips of Yuba City caught on worms.

Trophy trout plants double up in March & April
WE PLANTED 500 BASS & 500 BLUEGILL ON MARCH 1ST

Our Bass & Bluegill planting program is continuing and has proved to very successful. This last winter produced some awesome Bass up to 11-3/4 pounds. We stocked 500 of each Largemouth Bass & Bluegill last Thursday. We took them to the other side of the lake where the habitat is now underwater and they all looked to be around 12 inches already. As the weather continues to warm up this week the bass will be on the move again getting ready to spawn. Most of the Bass that are caught are generally picked up by boaters since their natural habitat areas are on the east side and up in the channel. Occasionally a fisherman will pick up a bass while trout fishing but it is rare. The Bluegill are often caught on this side since one of their spawning areas is near the boat launch. We also have Black Crappie which will generally be caught from boats in the Bass areas, using live minnows or mini jigs for bait.

The second week of March exploded with not only HUGE trout being caught as you can well see, but the Bass are active and very aggressive too. Regina Chung's perfect vacation ended with an enormous 7 lb. 5 oz. Rainbow she caught and landed from shore down by the dam. She holds the title for her family fishout-WOW REGINA! Jerlene Schumacher of Reno, NV outdid her husband's 3 pounder with her very own 7.5 lb. while "float tubing". Wes Ahrens...... Read More

The fishermen that were here on the day of the first trophy plant had high expectations of catching an easy dinner but things got off to a rocky start. That day and the next day I hadn't heard of any catches until late the following day when Jeff Kern who had been hitting it hard all day long with little luck hooked onto a 4 lb. 12 oz. Rainbow on the swimming beach. He seemed to get things started and...... Read More
