EAST WALKER RIVER
The East is down to about 390 cfs now, it’s been coming down a little at a time lately and with any luck that trend will continue. The fishing has been pretty good down there for some of the more experienced anglers but still a little tough for some at this flow. As always, one of the keys is to get your flies down near the bottom where the fish are hanging out most of the time. That being said, I did talk to one angler this week who pulled some fish with caddis dries in some very soft water in the late evening. There has been some good streamer action as well as nymphing. We are still getting reports of good numbers of fish in the low to mid 20’s as well as the “Oh my gosh” stories about the fish in the high 20’s that get away. Keep an eye on the flows, I think we’re in for a great Fall.
Recommended Flies:
Rainbow warrior, flashback emerger, silver streak, zebra midge, WD-40, buckskin caddis, z-wing caddis, deep sparkle pupa, san juan worm, squirmy wormy, zuddler, sculpzilla, peanut, dead drift crayfish.
SCEIRINE RANCH
We haven’t had any clients on the ranch this past week, like the California side the fishing can be difficult but could definitely be worth the trip!
HUNEWILL POND
We just had a couple clients on the pond this week and the fishing was pretty good! Still lots of damsels coming off and most of the action was either on damsel nymphs or adult damsels. Keeping away from the weeds is important but when you get into the less weedy areas the fish are pretty aggressive.
BRIDGEPORT RESERVOIR
Bridgeport is still producing some very nice fish in the 3 to 5 pound range though we have received some reports from anglers saying the action is slow. It seems like some days are very good with most of the reports being good but other days the fish are nowhere to to be found. On the good days they are catching fish trolling with needlefish, crawlers and Thomas bouyants and with bait like pinched crawlers, power bait and inflated crawlers. We haven’t heard much about good shore fishing, most of the action has been out of boats, tubes or kayaks. The better areas seem to be Rainbow Point, out in front of the marina and some fish are starting to be caught up in Buckeye Bay.
KIRMAN LAKE
We didn’t hear anything from Kirman this week, if/when we do we’ll pass the information on.
TWIN LAKES
Like Bridgeport, the Twins are producing some very nice fish on most days but other days are a little tougher. We’ve seen some good rainbows up to almost 6 pounds come out this week. The successful bait anglers are using powerbait, crawlers and mice tails while the trolling has produced some fish with kastmasters, Thomas bouyants and Rapalas. Fly anglers are using Twin Lakes Specials, matukas, seal buggers, soft hackles and zug bugs.
WEST WALKER RIVER
The West is still running around 1000 cfs and still pretty dirty. I’d look for the flows to come down in the next few weeks and the fishing up there to get pretty good.
VIRGINIA LAKES
We have also had some good reports from the Virginias as well as some slow reports. Like the other lakes it seems like some days the fish are very active while other days not so much. Things to give a try up there include night crawlers, powerbait, mice tails, pinched crawlers, Thomas bouyants, kastmasters, panther martins and for the fly anglers try seal buggers, simi seal leeches, balanced leeches, mini leeches, soft hackles and zug bugs.
