THE MAZATLAN FISH REPORT - THE ARIES SPORTFISHING FLEET
10-2-2008
Larry Edwards
I had a long talk with Geronimo Cevallos concerning the fishing at
Mazatlan and all the information reflected near bonanza fishing,
especially for the bigger dorado and now, great catches of permit.
Geronimo is fun to talk fishing with as he tends to get himself
excited just describing the current activity throughout the area.
The average dorado has been fairly consistent at 30 lbs.,( plus-
minus) with fair numbers still in the 50-plus lb. ranges. The permit
are big and averaging 20 lbs. or better. Earlier in the week, they
had fair yellowfin tuna fishing with the fish in the 70-80 lb.
brackets, running with the porpoise. Geronimo maintains it's still
easy limit fishing for dorado from both, the cruisers and the super
pangas . The offshore waters are producing an occasional blue marlin
and sailfish, but the anglers have been focusing heavily on the ease
of catching dorado along the current break and scum-line, which
tends to vary from 6-10 miles from the shore line. There largest
fish for the week was a smaller blue marlin, approximately 200 lbs.,
taken aboard the "Aries III". While the boats are still lacking
anglers, the fishing is very impressive and enormously fun for the
light tackle, enthusiast, where the angler can stay hooked-up for
most of the day.
Mazatlan Climate: Partly cloudy weather, a little bit humid, temps from 72 nights to 90 daytime highs and still an occasional thundershower.
Sea Conditions: Just excellent, mostly calm with light surface breezes, temps at 85-86 throughout the area.
Best Bait/Lure: The ballyhoo, (which is a fairly new bait to be used so much in this area) has been red hot for the dorado. According to Geronimo, they never realized that so many ballyhoo were present in the area, but they are able to catch all they need for the fishing days with the cast nets, just out near the island, out in front of the Marina. It's been an almost instant bite on dorado using the ballyhoo, even in dead bait form. Billfish on rigged mullet.
Best fishing area: Dorado along the current break, 6-10 miles offshore. Permit on the bottom at 6 miles in front of the Marina. Billfish and yellowfin tuna at 18-28 miles, southwest of the Marina
