Mike Lackey docked his Vagabond at Pt. Loma Sportfishing September 27 with a catch of quality tuna and yellowtail from Guadalupe Island. A highlight of the six-day, 24-passenger trip came when he hooked a big tuna on a popper and handed it to Jim Smith of Cucamonga, who reeled in the ineligible 95-pound yellowfin.
Jack Bair of Huntington Beach had the best catch of big tuna, with three that weighed 110, 87 and 86.8 pounds. His big one won first place, and he said it bit on a sardine and a 3/0 VMC hook. He used 40-pound Seaguar fluorocarbon, 40-pound Big Game line and 60-pound Line One Spectra; all wound on an Avet LX reel and a GRUSA seven-foot rod.
