New Melones Reservoir's current lake level is 1070.50 and 17ft.6" from full, water levels rising 11.4 ft. in 14 days. Snow melt in the Sierras will continue to feed New Melones well into the summer months from deep drifts in the mountain forests. Water temperatures are above 80 d. making it tempting to jump in and cool off while fishing these hot days. Recreational activities are in full swing on the lake with boaters coming to cool off and get in some good lake time.  The Tuttletown, Glory Hole Point and Angels Cove ramps are all operational.

We like to promote catch and release on New Melones. If you do so, please provide us a picture and bring it in for a copy or email it to us at gloryholesports@yahoo.com so we can put it on the board or in the newsletter.

Anglers FYI: For anyone with a potential lake record please call us at the store and hopefully we can send someone to weigh, photograph and measure the catch at the lake. GHS is the unofficial recorder of lake records for New Melones, and we understand there is sometimes conflicting interest in the welfare of the catch, whether or not to release the potential record, sacrificing your place as a record holder for the lake.

We do promote catch and release. For potential lake records, record the statistics of the fish... length, girth, weight and photographed at the lake before releasing her. If indeed we can verify the information that is provided, such as a witness, comparing the scale used with ours, a photograph with the fish hanging from the scale and can see the scale weight, etc...then we can accept this as proof. If your catch has expired than indeed bring it in to GHS so we can record it here, and you can have it mounted!

TROUT
Beautiful large trout are being caught by anglers fishing the cooler waters at 40- 60 ft. Wish we knew about this angler and the catch, but no information was captured from him before he left.

KOKANEE
Numbers on Kokanee are strong with anglers continuing to land limits of them.
Carol Harpel of Lodi was fishing near Rose Island early morning to mid day landing these nice koks. She was using green wiggle hoochie w. green dodger.

We have a good selection of tackle for Kokanee fishing,  Paulina Peak Tackle, Rocky Mountain Tackle, R&K Spinners, Apex Lures, Brad's Kokanee Cut Plugs, Mack's spinners, dodgers and hoochies. Also dyed kokanee corn in different scents.

BASS

This bass angler sent us his catch of a healthy largemouth. Plenty of quality bass are being caught and released to fight another day.

CATFISH
Anglers targeting Catfish are having good luck with cut baits.

CRAPPIE
Sunfish continue to produce on the lake using live minnows.

Look how fat this almost 17" Kokanee is,caught on Melones.The cold water is filling New  Melones up big time and the Kokanee are still being caught in the 40' range. The surface temp. is just above 80 so with the cold water coming in the koks we caught last week went from 42' down to 62',and just starting to school up.

The Kokanee are also spread all over the main lake. We put koks in the boat at glory hole point, the spillway and in between, Rose and South Island. The bite is early am then it slows down, can't wait till the water stabilize the bite should be even hotter and the koks are going to get even bigger.
It seems any lure in pink and green or watermelon colors worked great for us.

The bass fishing on New Melones continues to be productive. The lake level is on a steady rise which has made the fish a little tougher to locate on some days. The mornings and evenings are the best times to target bass and the midday heat can make the bite a little slow. There are an abundance of small buck bass and sunfish in the flooded grass making this a great time of the year to take a kid fishing. The topwater bite has yet to bust wide open, but we have had a few successful trips in which we landed some quality bass that broke the surface. Try using poppers and walk-the-dog style baits fish with an occasional pause to tempt the bass. Many finesse techniques are working well. Try using more weight as you fish deeper and less weight on none when fishing the shoreline. As the wind picks up a crankbait or spinnerbait will trigger reaction strikes and can be a great way to locate the bass.

Bass fishing continues to be great on new melones. With water temp 75-80 degrees the fish are in high gear and hunt for food. Water clarity is 5-12' depending on the area of the lake. Reaction baits like top water, spinner baits and crank baits have been great search tools to find fish. Once located small Swimbaits and finesse can be used to pick up a few more bites. During high traffic days like the weekends the mud lines have also been holding some good bites.
