South Lake Report

9-21-2008
Jared Smith

Another week of exceptionally mild weather combined with the cooperative mood of the trout made for a stellar week in the Bishop Creek Canyon. The inlets at the back of the lake remain the best spots for both quantity and quality of fish including a lot of gorgeous 10 to 13" wild Brown & Brook Trout. Speaking with anglers this week it's been very obvious the fall spawners are getting more and more active as we approach October. Brown or pink plastics, inflated nightcrawlers and wooly buggers were the top producers at South this week. Top fish of the week was a fat 6lb Alper caught by Parchers Resort Owner Judy Smith of La Habra, CA on a brown mini-jig. The DFG pulled a no-show for the 2nd time in a month but thankfully heavy Alpers plants by Parchers Resort and Inyo County this season has kept the bite solid, especially on rainbows in the 1 1/2 to 2lb range. The Bishop Creek Fall Classic Fishing Derby is still going strong and another tagged Alper was caught out of South Lake this week - this fish was one of the $300 fish!

The boat launch at the lake is closed to trailered boats but it is still open to float tubes and kayaks. Even though the lake is now closed to private boaters, the rental fleet will remain on the water well into October.
