What's happening at LV?

Congratulations to our Trout Fishing Derby winners! Los Vaqueros hosted the annual spring Trout Fishing Derby during the month of April, and we had a great turn out. The anglers who caught the three largest trout are listed below.

1st Place: Marco Talavera caught a 7.11-pound, 25-inch trout and won a Fish Finder

2nd Place: Alan Lambert caught a 6.67-pound, 24-inch trout and won Rod and Reel Package

3rd Place: Gou Yang caught a 6.47-pound, 24-inch trout and won a Boat Rental

Thank you to everyone who came out to the watershed and participated this year!

Snakes and Summer

As temperatures are continuing to get warmer, snakes will start to become more active. Please remember to watch where you are walking out at the watershed and choose footwear that is practical for the areas you are in (i.e. boots as opposed to sandals).

While many of the snakes at Los Vaqueros are harmless, you may encounter rattlesnakes. Check out some of our tips for being prepared and avoiding encounters.

UPDATE: Trail Closure Notice still in effect for Nesting Golden Eagles
Some trails have opened up, while a few trails are still closed to allow for a safe space for Golden Eagle nesting. See below for specific trail closures. Stay tuned for an updated map on our website.

    •    Kellogg Creek Trail from Kellogg Recreation Area to Walnut Blvd.
    •    Los Vaqueros Trail from Black Hills Trail to Canada Trail
    •    Homestead Trail

The Augmented Reality Sandbox is back at the Interpretive Center!

The Augmented Reality Sandbox brings earth science to life by merging hands-on play with digital effects. It combines a real sandbox with a motion-sensing camera and a digital projector. As users shape the sand with their hands, the camera detects the changes and a computer projects colors depicting elevation, vividly illustrating the principles of topographic maps. Users can also create rainstorms, lakes and rivers, and immediately see how reshaping the sand surface changes the water flow.

The Interpretive Center is open on weekends from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. More details here.

Los Vaqueros is open on July 4, and, as a
reminder, fireworks are strictly forbidden
due to the high fire danger.
