Kens Sporting Goods Fishing Report

East Walker River
The East is running at about 340 cfs right now which is quite a bit lower than last week. We’ve been getting quite a few very good reports from down there lately. Most of the good reports have been from anglers fishing nymphs but there’s been a few good reports coming from anglers fishing streamers as well. One of the main things that leads to success down there right now is to add sufficient weight to your nymph or streamer rig to get your flies down to the bottom where the fish are hanging out, if you don’t get your rig to the bottom, you’re out of the game.

Recommended Flies:
Dead drift crayfish, sculpzilla, double bunny, peanut envy, slump buster, moal leech, zuddler, Hell razor craw, prince, radistion baetis, demon midge, blow torch, darth baetis, pheasant tail, rainbow warrior, rainbow assassin, wd-40, flashback emerger, San Juan worm, squirmy wormy, silver streak.

Sceirine Ranch

We haven’t had anyone on the ranch this past week, it should be fishing pretty much like the California and Rosachi sections of the EW though. As stated above the flows make things more difficult but not impossible.

Hunewill Pond

We didn’t have anyone on the pond this week so when the weather clears up a bit the fishing should be excellent out there!!

Bridgeport Reservoir

Bridgeport has still been kicking out some very nice fish from boats lately, both bait fishing and trolling. There has been a few fish being caught from the shore as well but the boating anglers have been doing the best. The trollers have been doing well with Rapalas, Thomas bouyants, crawlers and kastmasters and the bait anglers have been doing the best with inflated crawlers, mice tails, pinched crawlers and garlic power bait.

Kirman Lake
We didn’t have any news from Kirman this week but here is the latest info that I posted last week in case you missed it:

I was able to talk to a couple guys who made the trek up to Kirman this week, they weren’t able to catch any fish but they did say there were some cutts up in the spring channel attempting to spawn, or maybe just hanging out up there. That’s good news that there are some fish still in there. They didn’t see any brookies up there but they probably wouldn’t be in there this time of the year anyway. Hopefully Kirman will start getting back on track for the future.

Twin Lakes

The Twins have still been kicking out some good fish for the anglers who have been able to brave the windy conditions we’ve been having lately. We’ve been seeing a few browns as well as some very nice rainbows coming out of the Twins. Successful trollers have been using needlefish, Thomas bouyants and Rapalas while bait anglers have been using powerbait, mice tails and inflated crawlers.

West Walker River

The flows on the West have been coming down a bit but the fishing has still been a bit tough, probably due in part to the colder water temps. There have been some fish being caught on bait like salmon eggs and mini crawlers in the Pickel Meadows area as well as through the canyon.  The key is to get your bait to the bottom where the fish are hanging out and try to drift it slowly through the pockets.

Virginia Lakes

The ice on the Virginias is starting to show some blue here and there so it won’t be long before it thaws and the fishing busts wide open up there. There have still been a few anglers fishing through the ice at least as of the day before yesterday. Caution is the word of the day during this time when the ice is melting and becoming unsafe.

Random Information
May 26, 2019 - The structural engineer has finished up the plans for a temporary fix to the front of the gift shop and as of Friday we have secured the building permit from Mono County. Our contractor is going to start the fix on Tuesday so we hope to have the gift shop portion of Ken’s open for business by next weekend! After this temporary shoring fix gets us up and running we will work on getting the engineering done for the permanent fix which will likely happen this Fall. Hopefully next week we will be able to get rid of those dang orange cones out front!!

May 19, 2019 - We had an appointment with a structural engineer on Friday and all seemed to go well, we are hoping she will have an engineering plan in the upcoming week for a temporary shoring of the gift shop. Once we have the plan the contractor will get it done and hopefully we’ll be able to get the gift shop open and get rid of all those cones in the street! After the temporary shoring is done we’ll move towards a permanent fix. It’s great to be moving forward with the plans!

May 12, 2019 - After about 3 1/2 days of the tackle shop being closed we were able to get it back open on Wednesday morning! All is good right now and the tackle side of the store is structurally safe. The gift shop portion of the shop is still closed right now, we’re waiting for a structural engineer to come (hopefully early this week) to engineer a plan for a temporary shoring of the front of the building. After this gets done they will move on to engineering a permanent fix. Really not sure how long it will take for the gift shop portion to get re-opened but hopefully not too long. Many thanks again for all your positive thoughts and for keeping us in mind!

May 5, 2019 - On a different note, Ken’s has had a bit of a set-back yesterday, there has been an accident and a pick-up truck drove through the front of the gift shop side of the store yesterday afternoon. Thankfully no one was injured, including the driver, however there is extensive damage to the store. Mono County has asked us to remain closed until we can get an engineer here to assess the damage and let us know if the main building as well as the two adjacent buildings are safe to occupy. Our re-opening will depend on what the engineer has to say about the situation. Hopefully we will at least be able to get the sporting goods side open as soon as possible and hopefully the General Store will be able to re-open asap as well. Please know, this was an ACCIDENT, there was no alcohol involved, it was purely an accident. We are thankful the driver was not injured and we hold absolutely no ill will towards him. We will do our best to get everything fixed up and back on track as quickly as possible and hopefully be back in business very soon.
