Ken's Sporting Goods Fishing Report May 5th

Kens Sporting Goods Staff
East Walker River
The East is running at about 312 right now, this past week we’ve had some poor reports, some so-so reports and some good reports. Some anglers have struggled with the higher flows, it can be difficult to get your flies down near the bottom where they need to be, this is where the fish are hanging out and feeding. It takes a pretty good amount of weight to get there and some larger indicators to carry that weight. The better reports we received mostly came on nymphs though a few anglers did do well with streamers. The Nevada side of the river fished about the same as the Cali side but of course fewer people. There were some nice fish landed, some up to about 22 inches as well as lots of 12 to 18 inchers. San Juan worms really seemed to be on top of the hit parade as far as flies go.
Recommended Flies:
Rubberlegs, rainbow warrior, silver streak, micro stone, poxyback stone, Darth baetis, pheasant tail, dark lord, radiation baetis, prince nymphs, san juan worm, zebra midge, top secret midge, flashback emerger, sculpzilla, peanut envy, dali lama, zuddler, double bunny, dead drift crayfish.
Sceirine Ranch
The clients we had on the ranch this week all did very well, lots of fish in the 14 to 18 inch range as well as some around 20. Again, the San Juan worm seemed to be the go-to fly, as well as rubber legs and dark lords.
Hunewill Pond
The pond fished pretty well this week with most anglers reporting 5 to 7 fish per half day out there. Leech patterns and callibaetis nymphs seemed to be the best bets out there and there is still some good action on dry/droppers. Give us a call if you want to book some time on the pond and we can hook you up!
Bridgeport Reservoir
Overall Bridgeport fished very well this week, there were a couple kind of slow days but most of the week went pretty well. There were lots of browns and rainbows in the 1 to 3 pound range then later in the week we had browns up to around 6 pounds and rainbows up to almost 9 pounds come in. The Bridgeport Fish Enhancement tagged fish are making a pretty good showing in Bridgeport as well as both Twin Lakes. There are some fish being caught from the shore but by far the float tubers, trollers and bait anglers from boats are doing the best. There are fish up in the Buckeye Bay area, off of Rainbow Point and the tubers are doing well near the EW channel out in front of the marina. Power bait, mice tails, pinched crawlers and night crawlers are all doing well for the bait folks, trollers are using Rapalas, Thomas Bouyants and Speedy Shiners. Fly anglers are doing pretty good with wooly buggers, matukas and soft hackles.
Kirman Lake
Didn’t get any reports from Kirman yet, if we hear anything we’ll let you know.
Twin Lakes
The Twins kicked out some nice fish this week, some up to over 5 pounds. Bait anglers were having some success with mice tails, night crawlers and power bait while the lure anglers have been doing well with Rapalas, Thomas Bouyants and Kastmasters. It seems like the mornings and evenings have been the best time to be there as it seems to slow a bit during midday. We haven’t talked to any fly anglers lately but you should be able to pull some fish with Twin Lakes Specials, wooly buggers, seal buggers with soft hackle droppers.
West Walker River
We didn’t get any reports from the West yesterday but we did hear that it’s running very high and dirty, the snow is melting pretty fast up above so it’s in full run-off mode right now.
Virginia Lakes
The Virginias are still fishing well through the ice, there’s lots of holes drilled up there so it shouldn’t be too tough to get to the water even if you don’t have an auger. Night crawlers, power eggs and jigging spoons have all been good techniques.

On a different note, Ken’s has had a bit of a set-back yesterday, there has been an accident and a pick-up truck drove through the front of the gift shop side of the store yesterday afternoon. Thankfully no one was injured, including the driver, however there is extensive damage to the store. Mono County has asked us to remain closed until we can get an engineer here to assess the damage and let us know if the main building as well as the two adjacent buildings are safe to occupy. Our re-opening will depend on what the engineer has to say about the situation. Hopefully we will at least be able to get the sporting goods side open as soon as possible and hopefully the General Store will be able to re-open asap as well. Please know, this was an ACCIDENT, there was no alcohol involved, it was purely an accident. We are thankful the driver was not injured and we hold absolutely no ill will towards him. We will do our best to get everything fixed up and back on track as quickly as possible and hopefully be back in business very soon.
