Shasta trout bite cools off
4-29-2019
Jeff Goodwin
Today we fished Shasta Lake for trout and for the 4th day in a row, catch numbers have dropped way off. Its to be expected as the lake does this every time we see a big change in the weather, namely spring and fall. Its short term and its a sign of good fishing to come. Surface temps today started at about 64 degrees and were pushing 70 by late afternoon. I fished right at 30' where I got the majority of our bites. We caught a few yearling Kings, some bass, a descent brown, and a nice rainbow. We set lines at varying depths, but 30' was todays number for us. We marked a few small bait balls at 20' and some fish throughout the main boday in 20'-50' of water. The 30' line was mainly 53 degree water, but it was changing a bit as we trolled through different areas of the lake. Theres no hard temperature line right now, which can be cause for a slower trout bite. Things will improve and soon we'll be hitting good numbers of trout again on Shasta Lake.
