BASS As DVL approaches its fifth year it continues to exceed anglers expectations. The quantity of bass being caught at DVL is beyond compare. Fish between 15 and 20 feet for small bass or 30 to 40 for the hogs. If you get on the water early topwater will be worth the effort. Drop shotting small protected points, the dams, or submerged humps with morning dawn, oxblood, or Margarita mutilator is the most reliable way to bass fish throughout the hot summer days. Other reported baits include Senkos, Ikas, lizards, jigs, and fluke underspin combos. Jeff Alley of Palm Desert released 36 bass all in the 3 pound range fishing 12 feet down with watermelon lizards on the north side of the lake. Nine year old Israel Roman got two bass at 2.5 pounds drop shotting margarita mutilator worms in the third cove. TROUT DVL trout fishing has been spotty at best with anglers scraping up 2-3 fish a day either by drift fishing with nightcrawlers or trolling Needlefish, Kastmasters, Rapalas, or nightcrawlers behind a dodger or flashers. Most catches have been between 20 and 50 feet. Steve Spencer of Riverside got a 5 pound trout trolling a yellow and green Needlefish 55 feet down on the west dam. STRIPER The striper bit is virtually non-existent they typically bite in October or November. The combination of cooler surface temperatures, overcast days, and trout plants bring out the striper. Topwater baits such as Spooks, Zplugs, or floating swimbaits are the best choices for striper. CATFISH The catfish bite has been sporadic. The third cove of shoreline fishing, the wave attenuator and the dams are the usual hot spots for catfish. Cut Bait such as mackerel, shrimp, or anchovies usually do the trick. PANFISH If all else fails you can always catch blue gill which congregate on the dams usually near the stairways. A live worm or small jig will usually get you pounds of panfish. LAKE RECORDS Lake Record Striper November 11, 2005: Art Berry of Hemet; 29.77 lb. striper caught at East Dam using swimbait. Lake Record Largemouth Bass March 16th 2007: Mike Long of Poway, 16.43 lb bass. He was fishing the west dam with a 6" "Real Trout" Rago swimbait. Lake Record Crappie: 3.0 pounds landed by Keith Thomas. He was fishing with shad. Lake Record Blue Gill: John Arganda, of Menifee, broke the lake pan fish record by bringing in a 3.06 pound blue gill. He got it on a night crawler fishing near the saddle dam. Lake Record Catfish January 19, 2007: Congratulations to Doug Hagadorn of Valley Center! He caught a 32.80 pound catfish. He was fishing at 60 feet with a Pig N' Jig around the first island on the north shore.
