"We fished at Alijos two full days," said Excel skipper Justin Fleck September 3. He was just back from a "flyer," a six-day trip to Alijos Rocks with 19 anglers. "We got limits of tuna and 69 wahoo.

"We got about 30 percent of our wahoo on the troll," he added, "and the rest were about an even split between bait and jig fish. The Raiders were hot this trip."

Fleck's fishermen also had a good catch of yellowtail and some dorado on the Pat Gallagher charter, which had Jamie Massion as chartermaster.

Gary Reid of Corona got his best fish ever on the trip, a 99-pound yellowfin, and it won the jackpot for him. He said he fished a sardine on a 3/0 Mutu hook tied to 50-pound Big Game line, and used an Avet HX reel and an Orange County seven-foot rod. The fish fought for an hour.

Michael Dinardo of Thousand Oaks won second place for a 76-pound tuna, and Mike Moon of Rialto took third place for a 73-pound Alijos yellowfin tuna. Kirk Buteyn of Santa Monica stood in with the winners holding his 52.5-pound wahoo, which took a sardine on 40-pound line.
