Shogun Sportfishing Fish Report
8-23-2008
Bruce A. Smith
For our last morning Norman took Shogun around to the weather side of the island looking for the infamous big fish that frequent this area. With names like elephant rock, steamboat, keyhole, big fish, these places are legendary not only for the stories of broken lines, but more so of 50 pound yellowtail. The terrain is treacherous, volcanic pinnacles reach up towards the surface with razor sharp spires that slice, split and shred monofiliment faster than a wahoo cutting a sardine in two. Heavy line, big hooks, tight drags is what is needed to pull these fish from their home. Most of "in the know" guys are using 60 lb. main line, a good size two speed reel and the biggest bait in the tank. Thankfully we made bait a few nights ago, so there was a tank of hot green back mackerel at our disposal. From here I will let the pictures do the talking...........
A couple of the stand-outs this morning were caught by Joshua Cocis and Marlene McClary, both of their fish will be pushing the 50 pound mark when they come to the scales tomorrow morning.
