Vagabond arrived at Pt. Loma Sportfishing August 21, following a five-day trip that scratched up a few quality fish, including a half-dozen or so wahoo. The boat fished at Guadalupe Island before crossing over to San Martin Island on the way home.

Regular angler Jan Ishii of Rancho Palos Verdes was one of 24 anglers aboard.

"The white sharks took their toll," said Jan, "but they didn't get any of my fish. I got my share."

Ishii won first place for his 50-pound yellowfin. He said it came on a sardine and a 3/0 Gorilla hook tied to 40-pound Seaguar fluorocarbon tied to 40-pound Soft Steel line and 65-pound Power Pro Spectra. He fished with an Accurate 870 two-speed reel and a Calstar 665 rod.

Chuck Lake of Newport beach won second place for a 36.4-pound yellowtail on a sardine and 40-pound line, and Jim O'Connor of Germany took third place for a 35-pound yellowfin tuna.

Steve Howard of Pt. Loma got two wahoo over 55 pounds: one on a trolled black and purple Marauder and one on a gold Raider jig.
