Matter of Time Before the Sturgeon Bite Breaks Wide Open

California Delta Chambers & Visitors Bureau

The current water temperatures are in the 53 degree range with waters on the cloudy side. Anglers are still targeting sturgeon and it is only a matter of time before the sturgeon bite breaks wide open.  Due to the amount of heavy flotsam in the system boaters should be very careful for the submerged logs that have inundated the Delta waterways.  If playing the waters by night you are advised to have a spotlight.  Reports indicate the sturgeon have even moved up the Sacramento River into the Freeport area where eel/pile worm combinations are working along with eel/nightcrawler along with ghost or grass shrimp.  In Suisun Bay sturgeon are showing in 4 to 10 feet where one individual hooked and released seven sturgeon on the outgoing tide. The striped bass fishing has been fair off Antioch for soaking live mud suckers or ghost shrimp.  Most of the bait shops have ample supplies of frozen shad.

If you want to target striped bass you are advised to head over into the South Delta to Middle River or Old River where the water clarity is much better.
