A Few Winter Steelhead are Showing Up

OR Department of Fish & Wildlife Staff

As of Jan. 8, flows were over 4,300 cfs at the Mehama gauge. Wet weather is expected for most of this week which should keep flows too high for effective fishing. River levels best for fishing are at or below 3,000 cfs.

Most anglers are targeting the few remaining summer steelhead and coho salmon that have not yet spawned. The coho run is over for this year, but a few winter steelhead are beginning to move into the river.

The river is now closed to trout.  It will reopen on May 22.

Anglers can keep up to 2 adult coho below the Stayton-Scio bridge any time of year and above the bridge after Oct. 15.
