Ironhead Guide Service has been fishing the Chetco, and Klamath River this past week and has been doing OK. Most guide boats are reporting 1 to 3 adult winter steelhead that run 3 to 5 pounds and a few smaller half pounders a day. Pro Guide Mario Gomez recommends you BOOK NOW if you want to get a fishing trip this winter because all of the reputable guides are short on days at this point in the game.

The winter steelhead season on the west coast is starting to pick up, and the smaller coastal rivers are receiving much needed rain and with each day that passes more fish are showing up. The Klamath, Umpqua, and Rogue rivers are seeing good numbers of fish in the lower ends, with the Chetco, Smith, and Coquille rivers experiencing low and clear conditions so the fish are hiding and appear to be on a furlough LOL, but if you work hard you will get your shot.

When it comes to fishing some of these coastal rivers in low clear conditions you really need to put in your time. The fish go and hide in some spots that are hard to fish, so you have to be able to adapt. You have to sight fish, and be able to target fish in the shallows. Each river has its own set of intricacies, and once you learn those you will have better success.
